Decarbonising our built environment, building sustainable, resilient and liveable cities
NUS set a new benchmark for the built environment sector with the launch of SDE 1 and SDE 3, two adaptive reuse projects designed to meet new needs while preserving the buildings’ embodied carbon, and reducing their energy consumption by two-thirds. Together with SDE 4, a net-positive energy building, they form the first building cluster on campus targeting net-zero.
Also launched was NUS Cities, a new interdisciplinary centre that will pioneer holistic and innovative solutions to tackle complex urban challenges.

NUS at COP27: Putting nature to work in climate change solutions
Nature conservation is key in the global effort to tackle climate change, given the ability of many natural habitats to reduce the amount of planet-warming carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Protecting or restoring such habitats could be a source of carbon credits, but science must inform government policy and commercial decisions – that was the key message from experts who took part in the panel discussions organised by the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (CNCS) during the COP27 climate change conference in Egypt.
Ongoing research at CNCS, such as its Carbon Prospecting Dashboard to support the search for high-quality nature-based carbon credits, and its newly-launched Carbon Market Integrity Research and Development Programme Singapore which aims to improve estimates on carbon yield across Southeast Asia’s varied natural habitats, will help to plug these knowledge gaps.
