With a climate crisis looming over the world, NUS is committed to doing its part on the global stage to fight for a greener future. From participating in the annual UN climate summit to working through international university networks, the university is helping to shape conversations, share expertise, and advance sustainability worldwide.
Involvement in COP
NUS is one of 23 universities in Asia accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to attend the annual Conference of the Parties (COP) summit — and the only university in Singapore with this accreditation.
Recognised by the UNFCCC as an observer organisation since 2014, NUS has sent members of its community to COP summits as official observers since COP20. NUS is also represented on the steering committee of the Research and Independent Non-Governmental Organisations constituency of the UNFCCC, contributing to research and strategies that support global climate action.
International Alliances
NUS also collaborates with international university networks to advance sustainability, exchange ideas, and share best practices. We are members of the following alliances:
International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU)
Established in 2006, IARU brings together 11 research-intensive universities from nine countries. The alliance is united by a shared global outlook and a commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and collaboration.
International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN)
Founded in 2007, ISCN is a global network of 101 leading colleges and universities across 32 countries. It supports the sharing of ideas and best practices in sustainable campus operations, research, and education.
International Universities Climate Alliance (IUCA)
Established in 2020, IUCA connects universities around the world to share climate research and strengthen collaboration. It supports leaders, policymakers, and industry in responding to climate change with informed action.
