On this page, we celebrate NUS’ commitment to green spaces through thoughtful design, innovation, and community engagement.
From Campus Design Innovations Group’s work in energy efficiency and carbon reduction to NUS Libraries’ green infrastructure, sustainable resources, and programming, these efforts help shape a more resilient, inspiring campus.
Campus Design Innovations Group
This pioneering team in the Department of Architecture at the College of Design and Engineering aims to create buildings that are beautiful, highly functional, and environmentally responsible. Their work focuses on new buildings and the reuse of existing ones, with the goal of delivering net-zero energy and low- or net-zero-carbon spaces for our students, faculty, and the public.
SDE 1
A pioneering adaptive reuse project that revitalises a 1970s institutional building into a net-zero energy building.
SDE 3
Extending the design concept of SDE 1, and designed to maximise cross-ventilation and deep daylight penetration.
SDE 4
The first new-build, net-zero building in Singapore, with a dismountable facade and a free open plan.
Yusof Ishak House
A NetZero Energy adaptive reuse of a cherished icon from the 1970s which now serves as a vibrant social and cultural hub.
CDE +
A precedent for advanced adaptive reuse zero-carbon projects, designed to be Net Positive with a generous solar PV array.
Building Sustainable Libraries at NUS
NUS Libraries actively champions environmental sustainability, aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Initiatives span green infrastructure — highlighted by the BCA Green Mark Platinum-certified Central Library — as well as sustainable collections, digital innovations, and campus educational programming. Below are the four focus areas.
Green Libraries
Prioritise sustainable construction practices such as using carbon-neutral building materials, and reducing carbon footprint in its facilities.
Green Resources
Make accessible more resources on sustainability, and enhance our community's awareness of sustainability issues.
Green Programming
Hosts diverse events and workshops focusing on biodiversity, sustainable practices and awareness.
Green Digital and Innovation
Use technology to enhance its sustainability efforts, including reducing the carbon footprint of field trips.
