Mangroves such as these are among the world’s most effective natural carbon sinks, storing vast amounts of carbon while supporting biodiversity and coastal resilience. Through the Initiatives for Climate, Oceans & Nature, which is part of NUS Sustainable Futures, NUS researchers are studying how mangroves and peatlands capture and store carbon, analysing plant–microbe and soil interactions by using advanced tools such as artificial intelligence, microbiome science, and data analytics. Their findings support evidence-based conservation, restoration, and governance strategies that strengthen climate resilience and nature-based solutions across Southeast Asia.
